John Bates has a nice overview of standards in internationalisation (i18n): Using Standards when developing global applications. Internationalisation demonstrates the need for setting values explicitly, leaving no information up to assumption and using all appropriate standards.
Why internationalisation has such an odd abbreviation is another matter, but so long as we use it consistently it'll be fine :)
It's "i" followed by 18 letters followed by "n". Simple!
